Design Strategy

In the Tips for Eating Healthy When Eating Out article, I presented the content in easy-to-understand bite-sized pieces, using clear headings and a numbered list.

The original article, written by a University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension specialist, needed photos and color to draw readers’ attention, along with clear headings to outline the information.

My goal was to find photos that encouraged healthy eating and fit well with the topic. I decided to carry out a circular theme through most of the document to help to draw the viewer’s eye.

I chose a cool light turquoise blue to surround the feature image at the top of the page. I repeated this calming color on the second page where I added the UofA logo at the bottom. The bold red played perfectly off the cool blue since they are complementary colors on opposite sides of the color wheel. I learned about this useful design technique from a class textbook — The Non-Designer’s Design Book, Fourth Edition, by Robin Williams.

The ABeeZee font for the heading and the Now font for the text make a great contrast. ABeeZee is a friendly slab serif font, suitable for discussing eating out and staying healthy. Now is a smooth sans serif, perfect for magazine-style articles. I also experimented with Canvas Sans and Times New Roman, but they didn’t look as good as the ABeeZee and Now fonts.
